If the film ever gets resurrected, I hope they pick a good director and a good musician. If it were up to me, the directors/producers would be J. J. Abrams, and the music would be done by either Wolfgun or Perturbator. But as awesome as that would be for me, I am skeptical that everybody else would like the end result.
I'm really hoping the Joseph Kosinski and Daft Punk team up again. My fingers are crossed a million times for that.

I do think that they kind of copped out on Legacy's ending. I mean, yeah, I like that they kinda teased a TRON 3 and intended to make one from the beginning, but the ending felt rushed, like they needed something at the last minute due to writing deadlines. They had even done a bit of building up to the possibility of Kevin Flynn returning from the Grid, only to have it suddenly be his final resting place.
The original TRON had a happy ending, so why couldn't Legacy?

I think it really was mostly set up for a sequel as they assumed it was nearly a done deal that it would happen. Admittedly, with Disney's love for franchises, it's crazy to think they wouldn't get one.

Dude, yes! But I don't know, I'd really love it if Daft Punk returned for the movie score. I feel like they really proved themselves as far as techno-dj's-turned-soundtrack-creators go (dude, Adagio for Tron made me cry. And the reconfigured album? GOLD). But I wouldn't be against introducing new players to the scene. I think a lot of artists have the talent to make it amazing. I do think they'd have to keep that electronic/orchestral mash-up niche though, that was their prize pony. It made the entire movie in my opinion (at least for me, but I'm kinda obsessed with electronic music).
On another note, what do you think would be other directions they could take Tron 3? I know the whole Dillinger Jr./ENCOM takeover/industrial espionage is the most logical story progression, but is another type of plot very plausible? What do you guys think?
So, earlier this month we received some news and updates regarding what USED to be TRON: Ascension. There was a special screening of Legacy in IMAX from Collider, which I actually won tickets to! But I wasn't able to make it sadly. After the show, Joseph Kosinski gave an update through a Q&A on the future of the franchise.
JOSEPH KOSINSKI: I guess I can say that TRON 3 is in cryogenic freeze. So, it’s there. It’s not dead. It’s alive, but it’s sitting there, waiting for the right time to move forward. I mean, you have to remember that when we made TRON: Legacy, Disney did not own Marvel. Disney did not own Lucasfilm…they own everything now. But this was before they owned everything, so from the studio point of view, they have a certain number of slots and a certain amount of money to make movies and if you can make a Star Wars spinoff or another Marvel movie, which are all doing incredibly well, a TRON movie, even though I think it would do very well, the question is: Would it do as well as one of those? That is more the reason we haven’t seen another TRON is that Disney stock is flushed with really successful properties right now. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see one at one point.
He even brought to the table the possibility of TRON living on in other mediums, such as TV.
KOSINSKI: It definitely doesn’t have to be on a movie screen. I don’t know if you saw the TRON ride, which opened in Shanghai and was amazing…I think the TRON franchise is alive in rides and I think there’s still interest in exploring other things like VR, but as far as the TV show, I don’t know, I think that would be tough. As you saw on screen, so much of the world has to be created digitally. You can’t just go and film a TRON movie, or at least the TRON side of it, so I don’t know. I would never say never. There’s possibly a version of that, but that’s up to Disney.
Lastly, and most importantly, he revealed a few plot points and beats of the film, as well as the overall arc of what we would have seen in the film.
KOSINSKI: The movie was called, “TRON: Ascension”, I think that’s out there. I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. We were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a good amount of distance from being ready to shoot it, but I think the script was in good shape. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a “Stranger in a Strange Land,” trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.

As much as I WANT to believe that TR3N is happening, I'll believe it when I see it. Especially with the fact that Bruce has long-since dropped out.
IF in fact, it is 80% done in the scripting phase, I certainly hope we also see more TRON as well as Daddy & Son Dilinger. Would love to see Cilian Murphy & David Warner acting off each other.

That would be so incredible to see those two working with each other. My fingers are crossed that they don't really reboot it, and we at least see Cillian Murphy return as Dillinger Jr. It's such a promising story!
